Join Jim and Bruce as they explore the natural wonders found along the fabled Eastern Shore of Virginia. The workshop will focus on many of the locations profiled in Jim’s recent book, “Between Ocean and Bay: A Celebration of the Eastern Shore”.
The workshop will be stationed out of the historic fishing community of Chincoteague, located along the southern reaches of the Eastern Shore. While most of our time will be spent exploring the neighboring Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge and the Assateague Island National Seashore, Bruce will spend an afternoon with the participants to explore and photograph the village’s boat docks, streets, and historic structures.
At Assateague Island National Seashore, we’ll greet early morning sunrises, roam the beach for shorebirds and close-up opportunities of seashells and other macro subjects, and maybe even photograph a pelican or two. At the Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge, we will search for a myriad of wildlife species including the diminutive sika deer, muskrats, frogs, and birds such as herons, egrets, snow geese, and tundra swans. Along the tidal channels we’ll search for river otters and in the refuge’s woodlands, we’ll photograph abstract patterns of pine cones and forest ground cover. In the woodlands we’ll also have opportunities to photograph the rare and endangered Delmarva fox squirrel.
One side-trip planned this year will be an afternoon at Crisfield, a small fishing village located on the Bayside of the Eastern Shore. Here we’ll photograph at the boat harbor as the watermen return to unload their daily catch. And on other thing: Seafood dinners galore during the workshop!
