Event Types
A Typical Agenda
With the exception of the Digital Printing Primer, outlined below, events begin on Wednesday evening at a 6:00 to 7:00 social hour with snacks and soft drinks. We start our program at 7:00 and conclude around 9:30. Here, you’ll meet your fellow participants, your leaders and GAPW host(s), see a couple of slide presentations and get a preview of what to expect over the next few days. Because of the late hour, we suggest you have a bite to eat prior to the Wednesday evening program.
Thursday through Saturday, we’ll be in the field early, (before first light if we’re shooting sunrise), and stay out until the light becomes a little harsh. Depending on the time, we may go back to the hotel for classroom work, go to breakfast or just break until after lunch. After lunch, we convene in class for lectures and critiques. Later in the day, as the light improves, we head back out to the field. If it looks like we’ll have a great sunset, supper will be a late one. Sunday morning, we shoot early again, go back to our meeting room for a final Q&A session and the events ends at noon.
We can’t control conditions and, certainly, weather and other conditions are key to holding strictly to any agenda. So, sometimes “on the fly” adjustments will be necessary.
Workshops
Wednesday Evening to Sunday Noon
For workshops, we choose a base of operations close to shooting locations so as to optimize classroom time. This is the event for the photographer who wants to go to a great location, shoot some wonderful new images, and get detailed instruction on the most important fundamentals of photographic techniques and composition. All our workshops instructors are acknowledged leaders in the nature photography field and are, more importantly, very effective instructors. At our workshops you will work side by side with our team at locations we have visited many times and know well! We know the right places to be in the right light! In the classroom you will learn from some of the best teachers in the business. Even more importantly we will critique your work and that of your fellow classmates. Together we will sharpen your skills and inspire you to become the photographer you have always hoped you could be!
Workshops start at 6:00 PM on Wednesday and end at Noon on Sunday.
Tours
Wednesday Evening to Sunday Noon
Because of greater distances between lodging and shooting locations and between shooting locations themselves, you will spend most of your time in the field fully exploring the region in which the tour is being held. Our tour leaders, some of Americas best known and respected nature photographers, will spend a smaller amount of time in class than they do in workshops. Classroom topics are more specific to techniques required for the tour locations and are less general in nature. Critique time is not compromised however. Field work is planned around getting the participant to the best spots at the best times and under the right conditions. Extensive help is available in the field and those needing one on one help will find willing teachers ready to assist you make those great images you came to get!
Digital Workflow Workshops in collaboration with National Association of Photoshop Professionals
Wednesday Evening to Sunday Noon
These events begin on Wednesday evening with social time and program agenda similar to the one described above. Thursday, Friday and Saturday, you’ll probably do early shooting at a nearby location scouted by the instructors and return to the hotel for a morning class session. You’ll return to class after lunch and, depending on conditions, go to another location for an evening shoot. Sunday morning will include a final class session and the event will end at noon.
We recommend you bring a laptop computer.
These events start at 6 PM on Wednesday and end at Noon on Sunday
