Ah, autumn. How do I describe thee? Magical comes to mind, but for most nature photographers, this is the inspirational season when the human spirit soars. Surrounded by an amazing display of colors, our eyes go into sensory overload. From the golden illumination of sugar maples to the red blush of staghorn sumac, the variety of colors can be astounding. Native American legends say the constellation Little Dipper is upside down in autumn to allow the season’s motif to pour down from the sky, decorating the trees with blazing reds, sparkling yellows, and flaming oranges. For some, autumn means the hustle and bustle of spring and summer is ending. For these folks fall simply begets the onset of winter. However, autumn has its own rush of activity and excitement, and it’s not confined to the mountains and the colorful transition of summer’s greens to fall’s cavalcade of oranges, reds, and gold. Nature photographers, that ever diligent contingency of outdoor enthusiasts who cherish every season, possess a special place in their hearts and cameras for this season.
